Half of England’s rivers are over-abstracted. This puts aquatic ecosystems and wildlife at threat. Using water efficiently means that we can minimise the amount of additional water resources being taking out of our rivers and aquifers, especially as demands are rising…
Here are our 5 top tips for saving water:
Five minute Shower
Keep your shower short and sweet! We know how hard it is to get out of a warm shower on a cold day, but by setting a timer and cutting your shower down to a speedy five minutes, you could save energy as well as water.
Use or install a dual-flush system on your toilet
Dual-flush systems are excellent for saving water. The small button gives a small flush, which is usually enough. Only use the larger flush when needed and you could be saving gallons of water a year.
Make sure leaky taps, showers and toilets are tightened and repaired
You might not think your leaky tap wastes a lot of water, but imagine every house in your street has a leaky tap, shower or toilet. You could collectively be wasting at least 5 full bath’s worth of water a day!
Turn off the taps when you brush your teeth
Turning your tap off when you brush your teeth could save approximately 6 litres of water a minute.
Install a water-butt
Installing a water-butt to catch rain water and using it to fill up your watering can to water your plants is much more effective. Water-butts can collect up to 5,000 litres of water a year to use on your plants. Watering plants in the early morning or late afternoon will also reduce evaporation thus saving you more water.
