Initiated by the World Plumbing Council, World Plumbing Day recognises the importance of plumbing in public health and safety.

Plumbing is essential to our public health, and in the UK, we’re fortunate to have quality water and sanitation systems. Research shows, however, that 1.1 billion people in the world don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water. Furthermore 2.6 billion don’t have access to sanitary waste systems. This results in the deaths of 3.6 million children a year, due to diseases carried in drinking water. In the developing world, unsafe sanitation systems lead to bacteria multiplying and entering the water supply system. Sadly, this is spreading diseases which are unheard of in more developed countries.

If we can provide safer and sanitation and drinking water, we can avoid many of these deaths. World Plumbing Day aims to focus on the importance of plumbers in the UK & across the globe, and their role in public health. This is a day we can celebrate the work of plumbers, and also recognise where organisations can provide more education. The day will also focus on new inventions and research into new water & sanitation systems. Funding into new projects in the developing world could provide safe sanitation systems which will prevent more deaths. Investment in projects which preserve the environment, and provide safe water could create jobs for communities, and boost the economy.

Kevin Wellman, CEO of the CIPHE, says: “Days such as World Plumbing Day highlight both the good and the bad in our vital and vibrant industry. We know the health of the nation sits on having safe, clean drinking water and effective sanitation. While the majority of tradespeople are out there working to an exceptional standard, each year people are still being severely injured and killed by poorly designed, installed and maintained plumbing systems.

“Plumbers are also on the frontline in the fight to conserve water, while safekeeping our families and the environment we live in. At the CIPHE, we believe that education and knowledge is the key to fighting a variety of problems in the industry. We wholeheartedly celebrate the role that plumbers make to our everyday lives, but still recognise more needs to be done to make all plumbing systems safe and sustainable.”
